Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt is already world-class, despite being just 19-years-old.
So it’s no surprise that Liverpool fans began salivating over the prospect of him partnering Virgil van Dijk in our backline next season – following comments he made to Goal.
De Ligt said it ‘could happen,’ as you can hear in the interview below.

We already have van Dijk, the best CB on the planet, and Joel Matip, his current partner, is doing well.
Dejan Lovren played in a World Cup Final and a Champions League Final last season, while Joe Gomez is incredibly talented – so it’s not like it’s a position we vitally need to improve.
But sometimes you have to take opportunities when they’re presented! Matip and Lovren are very injury-prone, and sadly Gomez misses half of every season with fitness issues too.
Hopefully, the young Englishman will come back and settle back into the side before the end of the campaign, but you can definitely understand some of the reaction to de Ligt’s comments, given Gomez’s lengthy absence.
We’ll let you check out some of the tweets for yourselves!
If De Ligt joins his fellow country man Van Dijk at Liverpool we could pull a fan out of the crowd to play in goal every week. https://t.co/ywgyiXkPqZ

We’ll give you €75M plus Wilson and Awoniyi for De Ligt, Ajax.

I’d sell Lovren in the Summer to help fund the De Ligt move, make an offer of a swop to Ajax and cash, Lovren is 29 now and a crock, time to cash in while we can
