Klopp takes shot at Manchester journalists for stupid line of questioning

Jurgen Klopp has dismissed suggestions a Champions League exit would benefit Liverpool in this season’s Premier League title race with Manchester City.

A number of pundits, including former Valencia manager Gary Neville, have theorised the Reds would simply be better off focusing on just one of the big competitions.

But Klopp isn’t interested.

“This only happens if the manager is of Liverpool and the pundits are from Manchester United,” he’s quoted as saying in the Liverpool Echo. “It is so easy to sit in an office or a studio and talk about things like that.

We draw a season and say the best way to go through it is to go out of all the cup competitions early. You do that and in that moment the same people go for you like mad. It’s like: ‘You are disrespectful to the competition’.

Now it is closer to the end of the season and it is allowed to go out of the Champions League without even trying to go through? That’s really mad.”

Interestingly, United journalist Mark Ogden has proven his point by being confused by the reply, before being put right by Jamie Carragher!

While our squad is on the thin side, when compared to Man City, it doesn’t mean the Reds aren’t capable of spinning a couple of plates. Last season, we finished inside the top four and reached the Champions League final in Kyiv.

In all the competitions, we try everything we can to win them. We play proper, real football and we try to win every game,” Klopp continued. “Now it’s the next one, it’s the only one we play on Wednesday night, so let’s try and win it.”

Virgil van Dijk joined us in the middle of last season and, with the extra addition of Alisson, our defence has been jaw-dropping. The Reds have only conceded 17 times in 30 Premier League games this term.

It should be possible for us to go far in any competition with a record like that and, like Klopp said, our fixture against Bayern is “the only one we play on Wednesday,” so why not be ambitious?
