Brendan Rodgers: The Leicester star I tried to sign for Liverpool

Brendan Rodgers says he made an attempt to sign ‘wonderful’ Leicester City full-back Ben Chilwell when he was Liverpool manager, but the Foxes were not prepared to let him leave.

Chilwell was also linked with the Reds before Jurgen Klopp signed Andy Robertson, and as much as the Scot has become a great player for the club, Chilwell would have been a great signing too.

Via the Daily Express, Rodgers said: “I can see [Chilwell’s] a huge talent. I tried to take him to Liverpool when I was there – so I know how good he is.

“We were looking for a left-back and he was right at the top of the list. We didn’t get to the ‘nearly there’ as Leicester were obviously going to protect their assets.

“The club were keen to keep him here as he was a boy that was recognised as a talent at the time. He’s a wonderful young player.”

Now a senior England international, Chilwell has been linked with a big-money summer move to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in recent weeks.

It would be no surprise to see him make a move to a much bigger club sooner rather than later. This season, he has really come into his own, providing two assists and looking assured in a Leicester side that has struggled at times.

He will certainly cost a lot more this summer than the Reds would have had to pay for him a few seasons ago.
