Liverpool defender fit to train again after lengthy injury

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has been sat on the sidelines since sustaining a lower leg fracture in December last year.

The young stalwart was taken off on a stretcher against Burnley following a challenge by Ben Mee.

It was first suspected that Gomez would miss just six weeks, but the true nature of his injury revealed itself and he’s now been out for four months.

The centre half is still training on his own, but Jurgen Klopp has now confirmed that he’s edging closer to match fitness.

It is nice – Joe is not injured anymore and nearly fit. He will not be in the afternoon training session because he has to do something else – he has to work on his endurance,” he told Liverpoolfc.com.

That’s how it is and how the boys always have to do it, like [Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain] had to do it when he was finally back in training.

After a long time, I think Joe was out for 15 weeks, that is long, so he needs to now create the basis again for the rest of the season

Gomez overtook Dejan Lovren in the pecking order to serve as Virgil van Dijk’s partner throughout the early stages of the season.

The young defender proved himself with some excellent performances – I’m sure we can all remember his goal-line save against Everton.

His return to the first team is an incredible boost for us, but he mightn’t be able to out Joel Matip out of his place as easy as he did Lovren.
