BBC Sport journalist says Klopp’s transfer ‘oversight’ will ‘always be a regret’

Jurgen Klopp’s decisions in the transfer market have largely been faultless since he arrived at Anfield.

He’s signed the likes of Sadio Mane, Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Gini Wijnaldum, Andy Robertson and Fabinho – to name but a few.

But one he waited on for some time was Alisson, the goalkeeper who has undeniably transformed us defensively.

According to BBC Sport’s David Ornstein, Klopp will always regret not getting it done sooner.

Before last summer, Klopp was adamant that either Simon Mignolet or Loris Karius could do a job between our sticks, despite neither the Belgian or German ever impressing fans.

Karius’s Champions League nightmare was the catalyst for Alisson’s arrival and the Brazilian finally offers us a world-class goalkeeping option for the first time since Pepe Reina’s peak.

“It’s been an oversight for Liverpool and it’s cost them,” Ornstein told Premier League Today, cited in the Star.

“You look at him now and [Virgil] Van Dijk, [Jordan] Henderson, and up to the front three, they’ve got a really decent spine.

“But that [a goalkeeper] was the crucial element.

“He’s (Alisson) made some extraordinary saves this season, but not just that, his presence there has given the reassurance the defence would have needed as well.

“Liverpool had a good defence towards the end of last season, but they didn’t have a good goalkeeper.

“That cost them in the biggest match of all and that will always be a regret to them.”

Privately, we reckon Klopp does wish he’d bought Alisson sooner. Firstly, he would have been much, much cheaper in the summer of 2017!

But the fact he’s currently between our sticks is the most important thing…

As Ornstein suggests, our spine, with Alisson at its base, is as good as any side on the planet’s, when you consider the strengths of Fabinho at no.6, too.
