Klopp tells reporters “the door is wide open” for Brewster in Reds’ first-team

Like most of us, Jürgen Klopp is excited about the prospect of Rhian Brewster and his future at Liverpool.

The Reds youngster turned 19 on Monday but started his celebrations early by scoring a brace for the U23s last Friday in a friendly with Northwestern University.

At his press conference on Wednesday, Klopp was full of praise for the talented Londoner after watching Brewster’s 45-minute outing for Neil Critchley’s side.“We watched it here [at Melwood] in our office and it was good to see,” he said.

“I said it before, but it’s nice having him in training. This week he didn’t train after the game because he had the bruise, so I don’t know if he can play at the weekend,” Klopp continued.

“It’s good to have him back. [It was] his birthday this week, 19 years old – crazy.

“There’s so much to come and only get him fit, keep him fit and then the door is wide open for him.”

The U23s have another crucial game coming up against Chelsea this weekend, but, when asked, Klopp was unsure if the promising striker would feature: “He got a knock with the goalkeeper – bounced in the goalie, a little bruise at the hip. We have to see. But it was good.”

That first-half appearance for the youth side was Brewster’s first action on the pitch since January 2018 due to a long-term injury he has been working tirelessly to recover from.

The future is bright for Brewster and the path has been laid out for him to be called up to the senior side. By conducting his rehabilitation at Melwood with the first-team, Klopp has fostered the youngster’s connection with his other star players.

With Daniel Sturridge’s future in doubt, and the sale of another young striker in the form of Dom Solanke, Brewster could very well find himself fighting for a place from the Liverpool bench next season.
