Liverpool target tells club he wants to move; Shaqiri may face uncertain future

Max Eberl, Borussia Monchengladbach’s sporting director, has confirmed that reported Liverpool target Thorgan Hazard has told the club that he wants to move on in the next transfer window.

It was reported, by Belgian news outlet DH, that the Reds had submitted an ‘official’ bid to Gladbach for the younger brother of Chelsea star Eden Hazard.

We made our intentions to extend Thorgan’s contract clear a while back now, but he hasn’t reciprocated that interest,” Eberl is quoted as saying by Goal.com.

He has now told us that he doesn’t want to extend his contract and instead wants to take the next step in his career by leaving the club. However, he still has a contract with us until 2020 and there is no release clause.

Interested parties have to offer us a transfer fee that recognises his worth as an exceptional Bundesliga forward and a regular feature in one of the best national teams in the world.

If it ends up being the case that Thorgan leaves us, then we will do what we’ve done well in the last few years – we will take the money we make from the transfer and use it to buy more exciting players for our team.”

Borussia Dortmund are believed to be Hazard’s preferred choice, but I wouldn’t put it past Jurgen Klopp to try to turn the head of a talented Bundesliga player.

Liverpool have been linked with a few wide players in recent weeks so it may be wise to expect a winger to be targeted over the summer.

With not many other clubs seemingly circling around the Belgian winger, it could very well be that the Reds are in pole position to swipe Hazard from under Dortmund’s noses.

If we did sign another winger it would put into question what role Xherdan Shaqiri has at the club. Not only that – we’d also have to question the future of players like Ryan Kent and Harry Wilson.
