Liverpool in three-way tussle for Julian Brandt who remains coy on his future

Long-term Liverpool target, Julian Brandt, has told Bild that he will hold off on making a decision about this next club out of loyalty to current side Bayer Leverkusen.

The Reds are joined by rival suitors Juventus and Real Madrid in the fight to secure the Germany international’s signature this summer.

At just 22-years-old, Brandt has scored seven goals and registered 14 assists in 38 appearances from a more conventional midfield position in the Bundesliga team.

With Coutinho leaving last January, plus the Nabil Fekir fiasco in the summer, we’re still in the market for a new midfield playmaker; at times, we’ve lacked a creative spark in the middle of the park.

To compensate, Jürgen Klopp has opted for a battling midfield with assists coming from the flanks. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson have been a key source of goals this season with 18 assists between them.

But attacking full-backs will only get us so far and we need more options. The priority remains the signing of somone who can unlock packed defences and let our front three loose on the break with killer passes.

Klopp can already call on Naby Keïta, Xherdan Shaqiri, and more recently, Jordan Henderson, for a bit of creativity in midfield – together with the long-awaited return of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. But none of these options are exactly the kind of midfield maestro we need.

Brandt’s profile is perfect for both Klopp and FSG; he’s the right age and with a reported release clause of €25 million and a contact expiring in 2021, the young German would also be an affordable high-performer for our midfield.
