Virgil van Dijk has been nothing short of a revelation since signing for Liverpool almost 18 months ago, but he was subject of Manchester City’s interest before moving to Anfield.
The high-flying Dutchman is a clear contender for the PFA Player of the Year award after a scintillating season with the Reds, and Martin Keown has told BBC Sport that our number four has his vote.
“He is just class, isn’t he? He purrs around the pitch, in possession or out of possession, he is a mountain in the air and has taken on the responsibility, at this time in his career to try to lead Liverpool to the title,” he said.
“That’s because he wants to be a winner. I am just glad he didn’t go to City, because he could have gone there and we wouldn’t have had a brilliant title race like this one if he had.”
Liverpool missed out on Champions League glory last year, but Virgil may very well win both the Premier League and Champions League titles in his first full season at Anfield.
According to the Telegraph, our title rivals were incredibly interested in signing van Dijk but Jurgen Klopp had already turned his head.
It’s hard to imagine our team now without big Virg at the heart of our defence, but, a scary thought, try to imagine what City would be like with him.
