Xabi Alonso admits his one Liverpool regret

Liverpool legend Xabi Alonso admits that he’d have loved to been able to work with Jurgen Klopp.

The World Cup winner hanged up his boots in 2017 after turning out for Real Sociedad, the Reds, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

He enjoyed a glittering career on the pitch, winning almost every trophy possible in England, Spain and Germany, but the former midfielder has his regrets.

After seeing Klopp guide Liverpool to a place where they’re capable of winning the Champions League and Premier League in the same season, Xabi wishes he could be a part of it.

I have played so many times against [Klopp], I would have loved to have been coached by him,” he told Nico Rosberg.

But I am really happy he’s at Liverpool, [he’s a] top, top manager and seems really passionate, because he gets close to the players, but [is] a good thinker of the game.

I really, really want [Liverpool to win the title] because we have been chasing it for so long, so long,” said the 2005 Champions League winner.

I know how much it means for the club, for their supporters, [after] so long without winning it.”

It’s particularly nice to see Xabi referring to us as ‘we’, showing his support for the Reds. The Spaniard also fancies our chances in Europe.

Yes, they can [win it],” he added. “Because they reached the final last year so now they know how it feels to be there, but we will see.

It’s going to be a great, great semi-final to watch and [I am] really looking forward to it.”
