Jermaine Jenas has got it all wrong on Jordan Henderson

Former Premier League midfielder Jermaine Jenas reckons Jordan Henderson’s ‘limited’ passing is because he’s scared of fans having a go at him for losing the ball.

This odd take has been presented, despite Henderson literally moving position over the past few weeks to take advantage of his ability to create.

“The only thing that ever worried me about Jordan is, I think, at times technically as a midfielder he is a little bit limited,” Jenas told BBC Radio 5 live.

“He will play simple balls at times. He has better passes in the locker, but for some reason he holds back, I think, because he can be scapegoated at Anfield, I find.”

Where do we begin?

Firstly, Hendo’s short passes and his lack of assists (prior to Jurgen Klopp shifting him to a box-to-box role) were entirely down to a player obeying his manager’s instruction.

Klopp asked Henderson to sit deep, protect the back four, maintain possession and simply give the ball to others to make things happen.

He was doing as he was asked with the ball – not holding back creative instincts due to a fear of being had a go at by the crowd.

And that’s very much been proven by his tremendous performances since being given more licence by the boss. Since asking Klopp for more opportunities ahead of an anchorman, Hendo has three assists and a goal in just over 300 minutes of football.

Right now, he’s an automatic starter in our opinion and someone we’re massively enjoying watching. He doesn’t look like a limited technical player at all – but a captain hoping to lead his club to Premier League and Champions League glory.
