PL midfielder: Why I voted for Virgil van Dijk as POTY… ‘Best in the world’

Huddersfield midfielder Jonathan Hogg has waxed lyrical about Virgil van Dijk ahead of tonight’s Premier League clash at Anfield.

According to the 30-year-old, van Dijk is the best defender on the planet and somebody he’d quite like to have behind him for Huddersfield!

Van Dijk has been named the PFA Player of the Year and Hogg explained why he voted for our superb 27-year-old.

“I voted for him because he’s got everything. He’s like a Rolls Royce of a defender,” he said, reported in the Star.

“He’s so calm and such a leader. I wouldn’t mind having him in my back four.

“He deserves it for what he’s done for Liverpool since he arrived. Everyone used to say they needed a centre half and leader – and he’s gone there and done that.

“He is the main man at the back. The driving force of the team, even though he is a centre half.

“Everything goes through him. He starts play and he’s like a wall. It’s like playing against a machine. He’s top class, the best in the world.”

We see no lies!

Van Dijk will hope to help Liverpool rack up our 19th clean-sheet of the domestic campaign tonight – and the odds suggest he’ll do it – considering just how poor relegated Huddersfield have been for the majority of the season.

Then, he’ll have a slightly trickier job of doing the same at Camp Nou on Wednesday, perhaps the hardest away ground to go on the planet.

Lionel Messi and co. will be out for blood, especially considering the Argentine has never once scored against Liverpool – making us the only English club he’s faced in the Champions League who’ve so far kept him quiet.

If anyone can do the business over there, it’s van Dijk.
