Midfielder admits he shouldn’t have left Liverpool

Jonjo Shelvey spent three years at Liverpool before moving on to Swansea City in search of more regular first-team football. The midfielder seemingly jumped at the first chance he got to leave Anfield, but has admitted that he regrets being so hasty.

Ahead of this weekend’s clash with his former club, the Newcastle man has opened up to the Chronicle. “I probably shouldn’t have left Liverpool,” he said. “I had the option to stay but I felt I had to go away as I was at that age where I wanted to play football matches.

You’d get a game one week, big players would come back and you’d be out of the team next week. I came away from Liverpool and kind of had regrets.

Shelvey was a useful player for the Reds – he was able to play in almost every midfield role and chipped in with the odd goal, but he never really looked as if he was destined for the top.

If he somehow stayed at the club, he’d now be very far down the pecking order in Jurgen Klopp’s midfield options.

He made 69 appearances for Liverpool, scoring seven goals, before moving on to the Swans, but he’s perhaps best remembered by Liverpool fans for a heated exchange with Sir Alex Ferguson.

The midfielder went in heavy for a tackle with Jonny Evans in 2012 and was given his marching orders. The former Manchester United managed reacted strongly following Shelvey’s tackle, and as he exited the field, he pointed at Ferguson and shouted.
