What a game! It was a frenetic and dramatic 90 minutes last night at St James’ Park, with Virgil van Dijk scoring the first of the game until Divock Origi came on and scored our match-winning third.
There was also some controversy when, in the first half, Trent Alexander-Arnold somehow blocked a Salomon Rondon shot with his arm on the line, before Christian Atsu slammed in the rebound.
The referree on the night, Andre Marinner, could have decided to blow the whistle and bring it back for a handball on Trent, a red card, and a Newcastle penalty. But since, Atsu fired the goal home anyway, the goal was correctly given.
By the letter of the law, Trent should have been given a yellow card for it. But, since the goal was scored, he was not liable for a red – he thankfully escaped any kind of caution though.
Having found Van Dijk for his first from a corner, Trent then went on to make another important contribution in the game, accurately delivering into the box for Mo Salah to restore our lead eight minutes later.
