Pep suggests City are underdogs in bizarre post-Leicester swipe at Reds and media

After eventually beating Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester last night, Pep Guardiola has inexplicably given his Manchester City side the underdog label in what seems like some very transparent mind games.

Guardiola’s City team hit the 100 point mark last season and were always backed by pundits and the media to defend their title this time out.

Back in August 2018, before a ball was kicked, 21/24 pundits told BBC Sport that City would win the league this year…

We’re not sure what Pep is on about here, but playing the plucky underdog card is never going to wash for obvious reasons.

In February of this year, the Catalan manager even tried to remove the underdog tag from us“When people say it would be an incredible achievement for Liverpool to win the Premier League, it’s Liverpool! Incredible trophies in their backroom.

“For us it’s nice to be there every season and fight with them – especially the last two seasons,” he added with what felt like false modesty.

City have spent hundreds of millions of pounds building one of the deepest, most talented squads in Premier League history, how they can be underdogs is anyone’s guess.

That, combined with the fact seemingly everyone is desperate for us not to win the Premier League makes Pep’s comments all the more perplexing.
