Reds forced into final day title showdown by Kompany wondergoal at Leicester

What can you do about a goal like that? Excuse the platitude, but last night was just one of those things.

Vincent Kompany, scorer of just 20 goals in 10 years at Manchester City, scored his first goal of the season, while his last goal from outside the box was for Hamburg against Brann way back in 2007.

Last night at the Etihad was his first shot on target from outside the penalty area since December 2013. Obviously, it had to go in now…

There were some calls that the Belgian should have been sent off for a reckless lunge on James Maddison in a dangerous position (which had echoes of his tackle on Mo Salah back in January).

One thing we can say, though, is that the Reds have been so exceptional and so resilient this season that we’ve forced one of the best team’s the Premier League has ever seen into needing a wondergoal from a 33-year-old centre-back to beat Leicester 1-0 at home.

City have scored 91 goals in the league to our 87, but they’ve slowed down in recent weeks with three 1-0 wins in their past four leagues games against Tottenham, Burnley and now the Foxes.

City couldn’t breach Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester until the 70th minute and their fans looked edgy in the knowledge the possibility of losing ground in the title race was on the line.

“I could hear people saying ‘don’t shoot, don’t shoot! But I’ve not come this far in my career to have young players tell me when to shoot,” Kompany claimed.

“For 15 years, I’ve told people I’ll score one like that.”

Why now?!

The title race is now guaranteed to go down to the wire as we host Wolves at Anfield and City travel down to the south coast to face off against a Brighton side who drew 1-1 with Arsenal at the weekend.

It was always going to be a tough ask and it’s out of hands now, but with City seemingly having the favour of the Gods, there’s every chance they could smile on us this Sunday instead.
