Ajax starlet has weird take on Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona

Ajax phenomenon Frenkie de Jong played his final game for his boyhood club at the weekend, as he’s already agreed to join Barcelona in time for next season.

The young Dutchman, who wowed in the Champions League before his side somehow botched a 3-0 semi-final lead v Spurs, was asked about his new club following Ajax’s 4-1 Eredivisie win over Utrecht.

Interestingly, he said that he doesn’t know if Barca need him, which is not exactly the impression we got from the 4-0 Anfield demolition job!

Perhaps de Jong is just wishing he joined the team in red!

“It’s been wonderful, I go to Barcelona with great joy,” he said, reported in the Star.

“It’s been a fantastic season, although I would have liked to have said goodbye with three titles, but it wasn’t to be.

“I watched the match between Liverpool and Barcelona. I don’t know if they need me!

“Had they been in the final, they could have won the treble.”

With de Jong to Barca already done and dusted, the attention is on where his equally lauded team-mate Matthijs de Ligt will end up.

Today, Goal have claimed the world-class centre-back is also Barca bound, which would make them a formidable outfit next term.

Still, under Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool should fear no side in Europe – and with Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren vying for a spot alongside Virgil van Dijk – our backline is as good as anybody’s already.
