LFC prepared to meet £43m release-clause for Uruguayan striker – Guardian

The Premier League campaign is over, which means it’s very nearly transfer rumour season… Gulp.

Thankfully, we can largely ignore it in the coming weeks as we have the small matter of a Champions League Final on the horizon.

However, you can be sure that Michael Edwards and co. are working tirelessly behind the scenes to appropriately strengthen us for the new term.

One name linked yesterday was Maxi Gomez, a Uruguayan striker from Celta Vigo, who’s works in tandem with former Red Iago Aspas in Spain.

The Guardian write in their transfer rumour roundup that ourselves, West Ham and Spurs are ‘prepared’ to meet his £43m release-clause. They don’t attribute the claim to a source, as they would usually, which suggests they’re taking ownership of it.

Gomez is 22, the perfect age for a backup Liverpool forward, and has been with Celta for two seasons. In that time, he’s notched 30 goals in total and has racked up 11 caps for his country.

Stylistically, he’s very feisty, which has led to obvious Luis Suarez comparisons – and is a demon in the air. Considering the crossing ability of our fullbacks, that kind of option off the bench could do very nicely, with Daniel Sturridge surely set to depart on a Bosman.

We’re not sure this story has any reliability, though. It feels like the Guardian have lazily rehashed something that likely started in a Spanish outlet a few months back.

We do need a striker, but haven’t heard from any decent sources that Gomez is a target, in any way, shape or form.
