Agent of young Turkish GK admits: “Liverpool officials have talked with us”

The Daily Express have reported the Reds have touched base with the agent of Trabzonspor goalkeeper, Uğurcan Çakır, as they look to possibly seal a deal.

Çakır has established himself as the Süper Lig side’s No. 1 as of November in a league campaign where he has kept five clean sheets and conceded 20 goals in 18 league appearances.

The 23-year-old stopper’s agent, Engin Kırkpınar, spoke with Radyospor (with his comments reported through Ajansspor) as he suggested Çakır could join the Reds, Schalke 04, or Lille.

As the reports are coming directly from the player’s agent and reported in the Turkish press, The Daily Express is ventriloquising from the horse’s mouth. In their translation of Kırkpınar words: “Every team have scouts and some of them are following Ugurcan’s matches.

“Schalke haven’t made an official offer for him. I know Lille and Schalke are following him.

“Liverpool are also interested in him. Liverpool officials have talked with us, we had some contacts, but no official offer has come from them.”

We need a new back-up goalkeeper to deputise for Golden Glove-winning Alisson Becker as it seems likely that Simon Mignolet – valiant cheerleader though he is – will be expected to leave in search of a starting role between the sticks.

After over 200 appearances for the Reds, its time for Mignolet to call time on his Anfield career. Danny Ward was sold for £12.5 million to Leicester City last summer and Klopp will probably be looking at a similar fee for the Belgian understudy.

Loris Karius is still out on his two-year loan at fellow Turkish side Beşiktaş and he looks to have finally sorted himself out there, so a new stopper is a must.

Maybe Turkey is the place to go? With youth on his side and a decent first, top-flight campaign Çakır could be a suitable back-up option in goal for the Reds for next season.
