Klopp shouldn’t sign a new centre-back unless one leaves – Carra

Liverpool should avoid signing a new centre-back this summer, according to club legend Jamie Carragher, but should consider selling Dejan Lovren.

The Reds have been linked with a move for likely future Barcelona star Matthijs de Ligt, but Carra isn’t keen on the idea.

Fans on social media have cried out for Liverpool to go in for the Ajax captain to join his national team defensive partner Virgil van Dijk at Anfield.

Big Virg has been a rock for Klopp this season, and has built up stellar partnerships with Joel Matip and Joe Gomez.

The injury records of Gomez, Matip and Lovren have left some Reds fans frustrated this season – van Dijk is the only player in the squad to have featured in every game.

Carragher doesn’t think Klopp needs to dip into the market for a fifth centre-back, but thinks the club should consider their options if a sizeable offer comes in for Lovren.

The form Matip’s been in, he’s been brilliant,” he told The Anfield Wrap. “At one stage three months ago I was thinking, ‘We need to buy a centre back.’

You couldn’t trust Lovren or Gomez fitness-wise and Matip was the fourth choice and you’re thinking, ‘Is he good enough?’ But I think you’d be mad now to sign one. Maybe if Lovren went, I don’t know his contract situation.

He’s far too injury prone for me so if someone made a good offer and you could buy someone without breaking the bank [you should sell him], because you’ve got Gomez there who was outstanding at the start of the season, you give him one more chance as well.

Unfortunately for [Lovren] he gets a lot of injuries and you can’t afford to have players in your squad who get injured all the time. It’s just not good. In Matip and Gomez we’ve got two excellent partners for big Virg.
