Barca star makes huge claim about Anfield collapse

Barcelona man Gerard Pique says it was not just the Champions League that Liverpool took away from his side this season – he claims the Reds cost Barca the treble.

Last night, Valencia beat Ernesto Valverde’s team in the Copa del Rey final, the other competition that Barcelona wanted to be victorious in. It’s probably a good job for Pique and his teammates that they had already pretty much tied up the La Liga title before they came to Anfield.

Via Goal.com, the former Manchester United defender said: “I believe that if we had gotten through at Liverpool, we would have won the treble – that is my feeling.

“We would have come here [to the Copa del Rey final] with a different mood, and I’m convinced we would have won the Champions League final, but that is football. We are really, really hurting.”

It’s quite presumptuous to assume they would have beaten Tottenham in the final, given Spurs drew with them at Camp Nou in the group stage, but you can see Pique’s point: the Reds have broken Barca.

Pique is not the only one to speak along similar lines, with Lionel Messi saying almost the same thing in the last week. Reds fans will not be forgetting that famous Anfield night any time soon – and it seems Barca won’t be either.
