Liverpool triumph in behind-closed-doors friendly against European giants’ B-team

Liverpool have played a behind-closed-doors friendly against Benfica B ahead of the Champions League final versus Tottenham Hotspur.

The newly-crowned Portuguese champions’ B-team play in the Segunda Divisão Portuguesa, and Jurgen Klopp was keen for the Reds to have a proper warm-up ahead of the big game in Madrid.

The Liverpool Echo report that Klopp’s men were 3-0 winners over Benfica B at the Reds’ Marbella training camp. Now back at Melwood, the lads are preparing for their biggest challenge of the season – the Champions League final.

Liverpool reportedly had an offer for a friendly rejected by Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, according to TalkSPORT, but this was down to the fact the players had already clocked off for the season.

The Echo report also suggests that Liverpool found it difficult to secure opposition for a friendly as most leagues had come to an end. The Champions League final comes three weeks after the culmination of the Premier League season.

Spurs aren’t going to be push-overs; they turned it around against Ajax in dramatic fashion and they’ll be keen to cap off their positive season with a trophy.

Hopefully the lads approach the game as if we’re already a goal or two down and fight, teeth and nail, to get the ball in the back of the net – we simply cannot have a repeat of last year.
