Matthijs De Ligt’s comments on his next club should be good news for LFC

Matthijs de Ligt says he has not decided which club he will move to this summer – but that it will be based purely on where he will play and develop the most.

The prodigious Dutchman also mentioned that Premier League clubs are interested in his signature, with England a very realistic possibility. Manchester United and the Reds have been linked, while Barcelona are still thought to be heavy favourites.

De Ligt said in a press conference on Sunday, via the Liverpool ECHO: “I look at what I think is the best for my career, where I can develop the best, where I can make the most playing minutes. On that I base my choice.

“Where do I see myself? Well obviously the Premier League is a big competition, Spain also, but you have other competitions. It’s not just about those two.

“I still don’t know anything about where my future is, so I’ll see how it goes. I don’t really have a dream club outside of Ajax.”

If what De Ligt says is true and he wants to go somewhere where he will develop the most as a player, then Liverpool is the perfect destination.

Of course, the Reds already have Joe Gomez coming through, but the pair could be rotated in the side, with Gomez deputising for Trent Alexander-Arnold when the right-back needed a rest, and there would definitely be game time for everyone.

As well as Joel Matip has been doing, this could be a once-in-a-generational talent.

Alongside Virgil van Dijk and under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp and fellow countryman Pep Ljinders, the defender could establish himself as one of the best in the world.

If there is any chance of him coming to Anfield, then Michael Edwards should be on the case straight away.
