Hendo explains how brilliant team talk inspired CL semi-final miracle

Jordan Henderson admits that the 3-0 defeat to Barcelona ‘hurt’ him and his Reds teammates, but that it was Jurgen Klopp who made them believe a comeback could be a possibility in the return leg.

The Reds captain says he, like most people, was not sure that it was possible to make such a comeback against one of the world’s best teams, but then Klopp spoke with the players and inspired them to victory.

Henderson told the Daily Mail: “The manager’s speech on the morning changed everything. We had a meeting at Hope Street Hotel, the base we use before every home game, and he said to us: ‘What we need to do tonight I would say is impossible but, because it is you, there is a chance.’

“He had us straightaway. All through the day I was thinking to myself: Anfield… the crowd… an early goal: maybe?

“As it turned out, it worked to perfection. I should have scored our first goal but, thankfully, Divock [Origi] was on hand to put in the rebound. I’ve never heard anything like it.”

Klopp’s words obviously resonated with the players – but even then, everything had to go right on the night. Thankfully, it did.

Spurs, of course, made a dramatic comeback of their own against Ajax to reach the final, so even if the Reds go a goal or two up, the game will be far from finished.

Having finished 26 points ahead of them in the Premier League, though, the Reds have to be confident of getting the job done.

It will be a close contest, but we think Mo Salah will take the game by the scruff of the neck after last year’s disappointment. Not long to wait now!
