Robbo recalls hilarious story from when he first signed for the Reds

Andy Robertson has been explaining how he felt when he first signed for the Reds – including how his medical was an experience to forget.

Since coming in for £8 million, the Scot has established himself as the best left-back in the Premier League, but it has not always been plain sailing.

He took his time settling into the starting XI, having been behind Alberto Moreno in the pecking order initially, but since then has excelled. He hasn’t always felt at home at Anfield, though.

In an excellent piece for the Player’s Tribune, Robertson said: “The medical took two days, and it was brutal. My diet was weird because the medical staff had to do so many tests to make sure I was fit and was going to stay fit.

“After I passed those tests, I had to go to Melwood to do a lactate test. After a few laps around the pitch, I felt something going on with my stomach. I knew things were going to get bad, but what can you do? I just kept running. A few minutes later, I’m on my knees, puking my guts out on the Melwood pitch.

“If first appearances count, God knows what they thought about me. The next day, I met the manager and I heard his laugh from a mile away. He’d obviously heard about my test.

“I turn around and he’s walking toward me, rubbing his belly and pointing at me. The staff behind him are having a laugh, too. Then he gave me a big hug. After that, I relaxed a bit!”

Robertson has definitely settled in properly since then. A second Champions League final since he was signed from Hull City is no bad record, and a win would mean the world to him.

He’s certainly one of us, representing the fans on the pitch as many of the players do. Hopefully, he and the rest of the team can get the job done on Saturday night – if they do, a summer of celebration will ensue.
