Liverpool chairman makes big Coutinho claim one day before Champions League Final

Liverpool chairman Tom Werner reckons Coutinho ‘probably regrets’ his decision to force a move out of Liverpool to join Barcelona.

The Brazilian initially handed in a transfer request on the first day of the 2017/18 campaign, before finally getting his wish in January 2018 after the Catalans tabled a £142m bid.

But since his exit, Liverpool have qualified for back-to-back Champions League Finals and have the chance of glory on Saturday v Spurs.

Coutinho has won medals at Barcelona, but been consistently booed by fans for what they perceive as lacklustre performances from someone so expensive.

“I would just point to the story of Philippe Coutinho,” Werner told James Pearce of the Echo in a long and interesting interview.

“I have only good things to say about Philippe. But I think he left Liverpool because he wanted to play for one of the two big Spanish clubs.

“We tried to convince him that we had the club moving in the right direction and that he could experience big Champions League occasions by staying at Liverpool. I think he probably regrets his decision.”

There’s been incredibly tenuous links between various European superpowers and our best players this summer, such as Sadio Mane and Mo Salah – but in reality – we haven’t lost an ounce of sleep over them.

Nobody of note is going to leave, unless Jurgen Klopp no longer sees them as part of his first-team plans.

And as a result, Liverpool are going to go from strength to strength – regardless of what happens in Madrid tomorrow.

This is the healthiest position the club has been since the 1980s.
