Danny Murphy says he thinks Liverpool are at a disadvantage ahead of tonight’s Champions League final – because of the three-week break that there has been since the final day of the Premier League season.
Before last year’s final against Real Madrid, a two-week gap felt long enough – and this year, it’s been even longer.
Murphy explained that he feels form will no longer be in both sets of players mind’s because of the break. With Spurs having just about scraped into the top four in the league, finishing the season poorly, that would be an advantage for them.
He told The Express: “Despite Liverpool being favourites – the delay from the end of the season is going to benefit Spurs more than it is Liverpool. Liverpool finished the season playing every three or four days and winning them all.
“Apart from the Ajax game, Tottenham finished the season poorly, so maybe the break has done them good. It’s certainly done Harry Kane some good.”

Murphy’s point is a sound one, but there can be no excuses for the Reds in Madrid. Even with a break, the players know that as long as they perform at their best, they will win the match.
A fast start could be crucial in the Wanda Metropolitano. The Reds will be more comfortable in the game having reached the final last year, and must make the most of any early nerves from those in white.
