Van Dijk discusses Ballon d’Or after UCL final victory

Virgil van Dijk was seamless in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final last night, and the big Dutchman was asked if he thinks he deserves to win the Ballon d’Or.

The Netherlands skipper may have got the better of Lionel Messi in the semi-final second leg at Anfield, but Liverpool’s number four thinks the Argentine is deserving.

I think Messi is the best player in the world. He should win the Ballon d’Or,” he told reporters in Madrid following the final whistle – as per GOAL.

So I’m not thinking of that. But if I win, I’ll take it! Messi should win it though. He is the best in the world, whether he’s in the final or not.

Big Virg has been at the heart of the Reds’ defence this season and is, arguably, the most influential player on the pitch.

With Liverpool going so close to the Premier League title and then winning the Champions League, there will definitely be a few people looking at van Dijk for the illustrious award.

I’m by no means of any authority, and I don’t say this to take anything away from Virgil, but I’d definitely hope Sadio Mane’s hat is in the ring too.

The Senegalese star has been incredible this season – he’s been our biggest goal threat in all competitions this season and I think it’s gone a little under the radar by people outside of the club.
