Why Matthijs de Ligt could cause the Reds a problem

Duncan Castles has claimed that Matthijs de Ligt could cause the Reds a problem if he were to sign from Ajax, because his agent would demand higher wages than what Virgil van Dijk is currently earning.

Mino Raiola, the Dutchman’s agent, is renowned for getting the absolute most for his clients, and with several other clubs interested in De Ligt, it would not be hard to start a bidding war.

Barcelona are still believed to be the frontrunners for De Ligt, with PSG, Manchester United and the Reds also credited with an interest.

It is highly unlikely that the Reds, though, would be willing to pay what De Ligt’s agent would demand. According to Castles, via the Daily Star, Raiola wants his player to be paid £12 million per year, around £2 million more than what Van Dijk is currently on.

De Ligt could be a once-in-a-generational talent, but if he came in on higher wages than anyone else in the squad at the age of 19, that would obviously not go down well. There’s no way the club would let that happen.

We’d love to see him sign for the Reds – but only if the price is right and he’s coming for the right reasons, of which there are plenty.
