Daniel Sturridge’s #15 squad number has already been reassigned

The #15 shirt, as worn by Daniel Sturridge since 2013, has now been given to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – the number he previously wore at Arsenal.

Liverpool have offered to replace any ‘Chamberlain 21’ shirts with ‘Chamberlain 15’ in a like-for-like exchange. When Sturridge departs the club on July the 1st, the Ox will officially occupy his former squad number.

This comes not long after Alisson Becker was given the #1 shirt number – his preferred number – with Loris Karius now looking very much out of the picture.

When he originally arrived at the club, Chamberlain was given the #21 shirt after Lucas Leiva departed the club, but has worn #15 for Arsenal and England, in the 2014 World Cup, in the past.

It’s fitting that the Ox takes Sturridge’s squad number – the duo got on so well off the field. Remember when Oxlade-Chamberalin imitated his famous dance?

It does seem a little odd to make the announcement so soon after the news of his departure, but I’m sure the forward would have been informed of the decision before it was made public.

It’ll be nice to see the #15 shirt in use again next season – it was strange to see the #8 shirt not in use for so long after Steven Gerrard’s departure.
