Crucial Reds man ‘comfortable’ in Liverpool – but won’t rule out Germany return

Joel Matip says he is comfortable in Liverpool at the moment, but has refused to rule out moving back to Germany at some point in the future, admitting that he watches his former club Schalke 04 at every opportunity.

It is believed that Matip’s contract expires at the end of next season, and with Joe Gomez back fit again, despite his incredible form over the last few months, the Cameroonian might find himself out of the team.

According to African Football, Matip said in response to a question about him returning to the Bundesliga: “In football, nothing is impossible. Currently, I have [had] two years contract with the Reds. After initial difficulties and injuries, I feel comfortable in Liverpool now.

“There is still a lot of room for Schalke in my heart. That never stops. Accordingly, my worries about this club were very big. I try to watch every single game on TV. It can only get better for the new season.”

The defender came in from Schalke as a free transfer and it seems that he might fancy returning there at some point. He was absolutely crucial, though, en route to winning the Champions League this year and under the pressure of the title race.

The good news for the Reds this summer is that, despite him being from Cameroon, Matip will not play in the African Cup of Nations as he has not played for his country since falling out with the coaching staff.

That will give him a full rest ahead of the new campaign – and a full pre-season to prove to Jurgen Klopp that he should play ahead of Gomez when the Premier League begins again.
