‘Has to go’: Pundit gives verdict on Reds man – and suggests a possible replacement

Ex-Red Steve Nicol says Liverpool should sign Cardiff City’s Neil Etheridge this summer – because current number two goalkeeper Simon Mignolet ‘has to go’.

Nicol says the Belgian needs to go and get regular game time – although he has shown no signs of being unhappy with his role at this moment in time.

If Mignolet was to leave, a new stopper would definitely need to be acquired, with none of the U23 goalkeepers ready to make the step up just yet.

Nicol told ESPNFC, via the Daily Express: “Mignolet has to go, he has to go and play. You need a back-up who is going to be happy to be there but who is of a certain level that whenever something may happen to Alisson, you’re going to put Etheridge in and he’s going to do a great job.

“I think this would be a good signing. I think the 69 goals he [Etheridge] let in, he probably had no chance with 55 of them, let’s be honest.”

It would be a good move should Mignolet force his way out, but we would like to see the Belgian stay put and deputise as he has this season – there’s no better number two goalkeeper in the Premier League.

There is absolutely no reason to make a change in the goalkeeping department unless Mignolet asks Jurgen Klopp to let him go. He certainly doesn’t have to leave.

With the Reds set to sign only a couple of players this summer, choosing to keep most of the squad together again for next season, signing someone between the sticks is something that should only be done if absolutely necessary.
