Philippe Coutinho makes Barca admission and proves Jurgen Klopp was right

Former Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho has not had the best of times since quitting Anfield for Camp Nou – and he has admitted that publicly for the first time.

Coutinho said, via Spanish outlet Marca: “I have not had a good season. My performances have been a lot worse than I expected they would be. The only way to improve and gain confidence is through hard work, and I have been working hard.”

As Jurgen Klopp told the Brazilian when he wanted to force his way out of the Reds: had he stayed here, he would have been a club legend forever; at Barca, he’s just another player.

It was always his dream to sign for the Catalans, but you do have to wonder whether he regrets his move now, having watched the Reds improve without him and win the Champions League.

There has been some talk that Coutinho could come back to the Reds, but that will not happen – his bridges have been burned with Klopp and his staff. We can see him going to PSG at some point this summer, but he won’t be coming back to Anfield.

It might still work out for him in Spain, but amid the whistles and jeers from his own supporters, that hardly seems likely.
