Leipzig chief makes transfer admission about star forward Timo Werner

Ralf Rangnick, the manager of RB Leipzig who will become Red Bull’s Head of Sport and Development at the end of this month, has once again told striker and reported Liverpool target Timo Werner to sign a new deal – although even then, he has admitted the club would not be able to keep hold of the Germany international if a bigger club came in.

Werner scored 16 times in the Bundesliga last season and the Reds have been linked with a move for him for a number of months, but Bayern Munich are believed to be in pole position at the current time.

The Bavarians, though, would rather sign him on a free transfer next summer when the forward’s contract expires than spend money on him to get him now.

Rangnick has not given up hope of persuading Werner to sign a new deal, but that would only really mean the club could get a fee for their star man – it seems an exit for the number nine is inevitable sooner rather than later.

Rangnick told Kicker: “It’s not a good idea for Timo to go into the final year of his contract, which could be difficult for his relationship with the fans depending on how his performance turns out.

“My opinion is that Timo fits best here, also in terms of style of play. If I were his advisor or father, I would clearly advise him to stay and extend his contract. When a really big club comes in for him and he wants to leave, he can still do that.”

Werner could be a really good signing for the Reds, and with Bayern waiting in the wings, if he is a top target, then moving this summer might be the only option. Time will tell as to whether that happens.
