Reds backed to sign Premier League star who could be perfect forward line back-up

John Aldridge has backed the Reds to sign Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha this summer as back-up for the first-choice front three.

Aldo said, via the Metro: “Maybe [Liverpool] should look into the possibility of recruiting Zaha from Crystal Palace, who is rumoured to have made it clear he wants to move on to play Champions League football.

“Zaha has given Liverpool some real problems in the last couple of years and Klopp’s ability to turn talents of his type into consistent performers has to make him the kind of player who could thrive at Anfield.”

There is no doubt that Zaha is a brilliantly tricky player who has caused the Reds problems on occasion, but his goal record is not that great – 10 goals in 34 Premier League matches last season – and he isn’t really suited to playing through the centre, which is what any versatile attacking signing would need to be comfortable doing.

There is also the added complication that he would not be prepared to spend a lot of time on the bench, which would surely happen given Mo Salah and Sadio Mane are better and are first choices.

The fee that Palace would demand would be enormous; if they want £60 million for Aaron Wan Bissaka, how much would they want for their star forward?

This is not a deal we can see happening at all, but you never know. Zaha would be a good player for the Reds to have, but there would likely be too many complications that mean it won’t happen.
