Reds reportedly make shock enquiry for Premier League defender

Liverpool have enquired about the possibility of signing Southampton left-back Matt Targett according to 90min.com, who claim the England U21 international could be the man to replace Alberto Moreno as Andy Robertson’s understudy.

The 21-year-old featured 21 times last season for the Saints, as he played a back-up role to Ryan Bertrand for Ralph Hassenhuttl’s side.

Whether he would want to move to the Reds and have even less chance of first-team football remains to be seen, but he makes sense as an option because he would not cost a huge amount, and could develop under Jurgen Klopp.

A more versatile player who can play in more than one position would make more sense as a signing this summer – but this kind of profile is the kind player we expect the club to go for as they seek a replacement for Moreno.

Targett certainly could do a job there – perhaps the biggest question mark is whether he would be prepared to sit on the bench for another season or two at an age when most players just want to play as often as possible.
