Roberto Carlos ‘proud’ of LFC man, but thinks he shouldn’t be in Brazil XI

Roberto Carlos has lauded Alisson, the starting goalkeeper for both Liverpool and Brazil, but reckons Manchester City stopper Ederson is superior.

The former left-back thinks Ederson’s ability with the ball at his feet makes him the better player, although in fairness, he does also pay Alisson an enormous compliment.

“Alisson is an incredible goalkeeper. When he left Roma, people said it was a lot of money for a goalkeeper but Alisson is a great goalkeeper and has shown it for Brazil and the Brazil national team,” Carlos told Alexey Yaroshevsky on the Raw Take podcast.

“He deserves all the prizes. When I see on television that a Brazilian goalkeeper plays for Liverpool I feel very proud.

“Now he is a Champions League winner too. He is a great professional.

“I like Alisson because he is tall and has good positioning but Ederson can play in any position – goalkeeper, centre-back, midfielder – he has great quality.

“So I am sorry Alisson, but to me Ederson is a bit better because he plays better with his feet.

“Alisson has won the Champions League and Ederson didn’t get there with City which makes Alisson very happy and that has to motivate Ederson to be an even better keeper.”

Ederson’s footballing ability is undeniable, but the fact is that playing for City, he doesn’t have very much to do in terms of traditional goalkeeping!

Alisson is a better communicator, a better shot-stopper and makes less mistakes than Ederson – so the fact the latter is slightly better with the ball is not so important, for us.

We agree with Brazil boss Tite and would start Alisson every day of the week!

Liverpool are delighted with Alisson, but potentially need to buy him a new backup before the end of the summer, should Simon Mignolet seek pastures elsewhere…

The Belgian is a very good no.2 goalkeeper, but the fact he’s been warming our bench for over 18 months now suggests he may try to leave Anfield for more minutes, which is totally understandable.

We have absolutely no idea who a potential new reserve keeper could be!
