Reds lock horns with Juve for out-of-contract Championship youngster

The Reds are apparently going up against Juventus in a race to sign promising West Brom midfielder Rekeem Harper, according to The Mirror.

The 19-year-old is out of contract this month, and, having not yet agreed to an extension on his current deal, Harper could leave the Hawthorns for a mere nominal fee.

The Mirror report that Juve are optimistic about beating the Reds to his signature, while Tottenham Hotspur are also throwing their hat into the ring.

This article from the Daily Record gives a comprehensive profile of Harper, who was previously linked with a move to Celtic in May.

With Slaven Bilic soon to take over the reins at West Brom, the Croat is eager to sit down with the youngster to convince him to remain at West Brom and push for promotion once again.

16 Championship appearances for his boyhood club this season yielded a goal and an assist, but if Biliic has his way he will be given opportunities to impress in the division.

Harper has been with the Baggies since the age of 12 and he may well decide that his development would be better served by another season of competition in the Championship.

At Anfield he would barely get a game and would probably find himself back on loan in the lower leagues anyway.

If we did end up signing him for a minimal compensation amount, it’s almost certain we would make a profit if we sold him; not that the Reds are necessarily in the habit of treating players like commodities.

Harper would represent a signing for the future, of course, but we’ll undoubtedly be linked with every name under the sun this summer.
