Torres makes massive Liverpool claim upon retirement that will delight Reds

Fernando Torres’s career saw him play alongside an absolute plethora of world-class talent.

With Spain, the now retired striker teamed up with Xavi, Andres Iniesta and David Villa to win a World Cup and back to back Euros.

With Chelsea, Torres played with Frank Lampard,, John Terry and Didier Drogba.

But the forward has claimed in no uncertain terms that the best he played alongside was Liverpool’s very own Steven Gerrard.

“I always say the best player I played with is Steven Gerrard,” he told the official website. “I found he was the player who completed my game. I think my level got into a different dimension when I was on the pitch with him.

“It was an amazing three-and-a-half years playing alongside Steven and I would love to go back to those days – even for one minute.”

The relationship between the pair on the field was frightening, in fairness.

Stevie had a mind-boggling ability to pick Torres’s runs perfectly – and the striker was so quick and sharp in those days that he’d finish nearly everything Gerrard provided.

As a duo, Gerrard and Torres led Rafa Benitez’s most impressive Liverpool side, that almost won the title in 2008/09 but missed out to Manchester United.

Torres’s peak didn’t last very long, sadly – but in reality – it was a blessing to many Reds to see him struggle at Chelsea after he broke our hearts by demanding an exit.

Now, we wish him a happy retirement.
