Bundesliga striker rejected move to Liverpool to be “centre of attention”

Remember when the Reds were linked with a Bosman deal for Werder Bremen striker Max Kruse?

Now it appears RTL journalist, Thomas Wagner, has explained he rejected a move to Anfield in favour of a transfer to Fenerbahçe, in comments to Turkish newspaper Aksam via Sport Witness.

“I know Liverpool made an offer to him. At first, I thought that a move to Fenerbahce is an unlikely one,” Wagner revealed.

“But he choose Fenerbahce over Liverpool. I think he will make a lot of money in Turkey and also he will be the centre of attention.”

Last week, the Süper Lig side confirmed they had reached an agreement on a three-year deal for the 31-year-old German.

Jürgen Klopp was allegedly interested in bringing the ageing attacker to Liverpool to replace the outward bound Daniel Sturridge, but it seems he wasn’t that keen on having a reduced role at Anfield.

Sport Witness also report that Kruse will apparently get a €2.5m signing on fee from Fenerbahçe and is set to receive a total of €7.5m in wages over the course of his next three seasons in Turkey.

Although there was some noise about the potential switch from the Bundesliga to the Premier League, we’re not entirely sure how much validity there was to the rumours – a fact the Echo also picked up on.

In any case, it looks like Klopp will be pursuing the complete opposite policy by pushing forward with 19-year-old attacking prospect Rhian Brewster as our back-up No. 9.
