Reds not planning to sell £25m-rated centre-back this summer

Sky Sports News are reporting that the Reds are not planning to sell Dejan Lovren, in spite of reported interested from AC Milan.

The Reds have reportedly not put a price tag on the 29-year-old and have not received a formal approach from the Serie A side for Lovren, although reports have claimed Milan would like to do business for the “£25 million”-rated centre-back.

Lovren made 15 appearances across all competitions in the 2018/19 season and Joe Gomez has now risen to the status of first-choice partner for Virgil van Dijk.

In the Englishman’s absence due to injury, Joël Matip stepped up impressively to play in 30 games for the Reds, capping off a 97-point top-flight campaign perfectly with Champions League triumph in Madrid.

(Opinion): Why the Reds should not offload Lovren this summer

Yes, the Croatia defender might be liable to injury himself, but, as we’ll be competing on four fronts next season, we could still do with having him around in any case; a player of his quality, willing to play that far down the pecking order, would be hard to find.

Although we’ve signed Sepp Van den Berg from PEC Zwolle, it is not really expected that he will walk straight into the first-team, instead continuing his development in the Academy for the time being.

Despite dropping down the hierarchy at Liverpool, Lovren remains a top quality option as a fourth-choice centre-back should his presence be needed in any event.

Lovren’s five-year stay at Anfield has seen him gel well with his teammates (particularly Mo Salah) and as a World Cup finalist with his country with a Champions League medal, the club would do well to keep him around for at least another year as a decent option behind Gomez and Matip.
