Pundit claims new Reds signing could be worth £90 million in the coming years

Darren Gough, speaking on TalkSport, says Liverpool could sell Harvey Elliott on for up to £90 million in the coming seasons, such is the level of his talent.

He said: “He goes to Liverpool, they’ll have to pay a fee as he’s not yet old enough to have a professional contract.

“If he plays some games and shows some talent, they’ll be able to sell him for £50 million to £80 million or even £90 million. That’s why they take a gamble on these kids.”

Gough made the comments slightly flippantly, although his broader point does make sense. What he means is that the Reds will know that even if Elliott doesn’t end up becoming a top-class player, he will be sold for a decent price – there is absolutely no risk involved.

The hope, of course, is that Elliott will be a superstar, and from what his previous coach has said about him, and his Premier League minutes so far, there’s no reason to think he won’t be. He turned down the likes of PSG to sign at Anfield.

The Reds’ focus in the market this summer has been more on unearthing and attracting top teenage talent, available at a bargain price before the values soar. It’s a strategy that could well pay dividends in the future – both on and off the pitch.
