French media scoff at Liverpool reporters & explain why club is falsely claiming ‘no interest’

Get French Football News has claimed that Liverpool are hiding something from the English journalists they’re briefing on Nicolas Pepe – and that watching the wool being pulled over their eyes is ‘very entertaining’.

The likes of James Pearce, Dominic King and Paul Joyce have regularly claimed we have no interest in the Lille forward – and that Liverpool will enter the new season without a marquee offensive signing.

But Mohamed Bouhafsi, the French reporter who broke news that we were signing Fabinho last summer and that we wanted Nabil Fekir, before any English journalists, is confident we are considering the Ivorian.

It’s difficult to know where to stand on this one.

Following the Virgil van Dijk scandal in 2017, where Southampton reported us to the Premier League for tapping up the Dutchman after local reporters published that we’d agreed terms before a fee had been met, Liverpool have been far more coy about potential arrivals.

Everything is done behind closed doors – which is exactly the way it should be – but it does mean trusted sources are not necessarily always privy to Jurgen Klopp and Michael Edwards’ transfer plans.

Just last summer, for example, the Echo told us we had no interest in Alisson, only for the Brazilian to sign a day or so later…

So what’s our prediction? Well – based on the many, fairly explicit comments from Klopp himself – we’d assume no new forward will arrive before the new campaign. We really believe his trust in Rhian Brrewster, but if the youngster has an awful pre-season, perhaps we’ll take the plunge later on in the window.

The likes of Melissa Reddy and co. are fantastic and great for supporters – but there’s part of us which hopes they’ve got this one wrong – as it means we may get an exciting arrival in the next four weeks!
