The ratings are in and the Reds have been ranked as the current third-best team in the world, ahead of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus, and Paris Saint-Germain.

FiveThirtyEight have devised the ‘Global Club Soccer Rankings’ ranking 634 teams using a research methodology called the Soccer Power Index (SPI), to give both an offensive and defensive value.

The two added together produce an average score which is then ranked against other clubs on the basis of the likelihood these averaged numbers would compete on a level playing field.

It’s worth noting that these SPI ratings are based on ratings from the end of the prior season, not on current performance. Equally, they use statistics from Transfermarkt to calculate a club’s market value.

Before a season begins, a team’s SPI ratings are based on two factors: its ratings at the end of the previous season, and its market value as calculated by German football site Transfermarkt.

Manchester City top the table with an SPI of 94. 3, while a 3-1 defeat to the Reds in the quarter-finals was not enough to unsettle Bayern Munich in second place.

Behind us in third with an SPI of 92. 9, it’s Barça, PSG, Chelsea in 6th, Real Madrid, Tottenham are 8th, Juventus, and Dortmund finish up the rest of the top ten.

Premier League-wise, Manchester United, Arsenal, and Everton occupy 17th, 18th, and 19th respectively.
