LFC hold firm on Mignolet transfer stance despite alleged agent exit plans

There has been more toing and froing on the Simon Mignolet situation, with the latest update again suggesting that he will be staying at Anfield according to the Echo.

Despite Jürgen Klopp stating that the Belgian ‘keeper is in fact a ‘keeper’ in more than name alone, uncertainty has perpetually shadowed the 31-year-old.

Klopp’s words were then thrown into doubt when the agent of the Reds’ No. 2, Nico Vaesen, claimed that Mignolet was indeed seeking a move away from the club just days after Liverpool flew out to the United States.

To be honest, if Klopp is suggesting he thinks Mignolet will stay, then it’s probably quite likely he will.

While the Mignolet’s representatives are allegedly trying to work out a solution for their client before the window slams shut, the Echo claim that the Reds are counting on the Belgian to solve their own goalkeeping issue.

Mignolet is the only senior keeper out on the USA pre-season tour, with Alisson still on a Copa América-winning break.

Equally, Klopp and the club are loathe to lose the 31-year-old’s experience, ability, and behind the scenes professionalism as top-class deputy option behind the Brazilian, but are sympathetic to his situation. At this level, he deserves regular, first-team football on his terms.

A loan move, it seems, would be entirely out of the question and the Reds would only sanction Mignolet’s departure for a substantial sum that reflects the fact he has over 300 Premier League appearances.

In the 2019/20 season, sustained runs in the domestic cup competitions will give the back-up the chance to step up between the sticks, with additional opportunities in the Community Shield, FIFA Club World Cup and possibly even the UEFA Super Cup.

Taking everything into consideration that we have at the moment, it seems likely that Mignolet’s tenure at Anfield will continue into the upcoming season.
