Jurgen Klopp gives honest assessment of Reds’ first pre-season defeat

Liverpool fell to a first defeat of pre-season overnight as the Reds lost 3-2 to Borussia Dortmund over in the US, but as always at this stage, Jurgen Klopp was unconcerned with the result.

Pre-season is exclusively about getting minutes on the field, and with the Reds having trained hard earlier the same day as the match, the game was about fitness about all else.

That’s not to say certain players won’t have been desperate to put down a marker – Harry Wilson, for instance, will have been delighted to get onto the scoresheet – but Klopp was generally happy with what he saw.

He told LiverpoolFC.com post-match: “It was very, very important. It was tough for both teams with the circumstances – wow, it was really warm.

“It was a very, very important session for all of us; 60 minutes for one team was maybe a bit too much but they had to go through this, and the 30 minutes for the other team was exactly right.

“How we conceded the goals was due to the lack of organisation – that will be better later in the pre-season. There were a lot of good things, some things which I didn’t like, that’s normal in pre-season. I decide what we do in training and I know how much we did yesterday in already pretty warm weather conditions.”

Dortmund are ahead in their pre-season preparations and also made changes at half-time when the Reds opted not to. In the heat, that was probably the difference between the teams in terms of the result.

Next up for the Reds is Sevilla – that match kicks off at 11pm UK time on Sunday evening.
