Liverpool v. Sevilla: Where the Reds’ starting XI from 2016 UEL final are now

Posted by

Liverpool were arguably favourites to lift the UEFA Europa League when they faced Sevilla in the final three years ago, but alas it wasn’t to be.

I’ll be honest, it was a particularly unremarkable game of football from the Reds with the only thing I’ve allowed myself to remember is Daniel Sturridge’s sublime consolation goal which was good enough to win a final on its own.

How many of the starting XI on that day can you actually name right now? Where do you think they are? I’m going to answer that question with this here article.

Simon Mignolet

The Belgian goalkeeper remains at Liverpool, but has been reduced to second choice behind Alisson Becker.

Kolo Toure

Our previous number four left the club at the end of the 2015/16 season to join Celtic and is now a coach at Leicester City.

Dejan Lovren

The hero from that game against Dortmund remains at Anfield, but is now third-choice behind Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez.

Nathaniel Clyne

The classy right-back is still contracted to the club, spent last season on loan at Bournemouth, and is likely to leave this summer.

Alberto Moreno

The former Sevilla man was allowed to leave Anfield at the end of his contract. Alby now plays for Villarreal.

Emre Can

The German international joined Juventus after his contract at Liverpool wound up.

James Milner

Our number seven remains at the club and was a big influence in the lads bringing home number six.

Adam Lallana

Lallana hasn’t had the best luck with injuries, but is still very much a Reds player and will be employed in a deeper, Joe Allen-like role this season.

Philippe Coutinho

The Brazilian signed for Barcelona last year for a reported £142million.

Roberto Firmino

The 2019 Copa America winner remains at the club and is a key player.

Daniel Sturridge

The man with the moves was allowed to leave the club at the end of his contract this summer, but is yet to sign for a new team.
