Reds linked with shock move for Premier League player who came through at Manchester United

The Reds could be set to battle Aston Villa for Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton this summer, according to the Daily Mail.

The Birmingham Mail claim Villa have already seen a £4 million bid turned down ‘out of hand’, with Burnley wanting triple that for their stopper, despite him only having 12 months remaining on his contract at Turf Moor.

A deal could make sense if Simon Mignolet was to move on, but there has been no significant interest in him so far even if he would be keen to get first-team football elsewhere. His error last night won’t have helped him in that regard, though he did make a great double save.

Whether Heaton, who is a former Manchester United player having come through their academy, would be prepared to come to Anfield and sit on the bench, though, is a crucial question.

As with most players linked with the Reds this summer, he will know a place on the bench is the most likely outcome unless Alisson was to be injured for a sustained period.

Convincing players to come into the squad is proving to be a tough task given the standard of the first XI.
