Van Dijk ‘happy’ former Reds man moved on this summer

Virgil van Dijk says he is happy for Rafa Camacho, the former Reds winger who moved to Sporting Lisbon this summer, because it is like him returning ‘home’.

Camacho has a lot of talent but felt that it could be best exploited back in Portugal at the club where he first played before moving to Merseyside. Van Dijk says he agrees with that and that the move was the best one the youngster could have made.

Via Inside Futbol, Van Dijk told Portuguese outlet O Jogo: “He is still young, has a lot to learn. He has been in Sporting’s youth set-up and probably feels like returning home.

“I am happy for him and I hope he is happy. He has quality and he knows what he has to do because we all know that there are many players who have quality, but then they lack the rest.”

Had Camacho stayed put this summer, his chances of first-team football would have been very limited. He remains highly-rated by the Reds, but there is a sell-on clause in the deal that took him to Sporting, so if he does fulfil his potential, the club won’t miss out completely.

Had he stayed put, Camacho would have been into the final 12 months of his Reds contract and he had no intention of signing a new deal. Instead, the Reds pocketed £5 million and the winger got the move he wanted.
