Liverpool midfielder motivated to ‘strike back’ against Manchester City

Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum thinks that the Reds should use the disappointing results over pre-season as motivation to turn over Manchester City at Wembley this weekend.

The Reds haven’t won a game since beating Bradford City 3-1 in Yorkshire, having lost to Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla and Napoli and drawing with Sporting Lisbon.

Of course, Jurgen Klopp has been without star men Alisson Becker, Mo Salah and Bobby Firmino so far throughout pre-season and a good result against Lyon will make all the difference.

Wijnaldum thinks that the disappointing results should spur on the Reds to claim the first piece of silverware available to us this weekend.

That’s what we have to do,” he told the club’s official site, when asked if he was confident Liverpool would put things right in the days leading up to the City game.

It’s all about making minutes as much as possible, but also to get the results. The season starts [on Sunday] so the result and the performance, it’s important for us to get confidence and to keep on going.

This is painful but we have to learn from it and we have to strike back.

The Reds have under-performd on their American stretch of the pre-season tour, with a draw the only positive from the last four games.

But, I’m with Gini on this one, let’s use that as ammunition to get the result against City at the weekend.

Wolves took the Premier League champions to penalties the other day, and they’ve only kept one clean sheet in their last four attempts – it’s not as if they’re blowing away the likes of Napoli or Dortmund on their tour of Asia!

Let’s win it!
